Books that are no longer needed by the Newcastle Region Libraries will head to sea with sailors from all over the world, thanks to an arrangement between The City of Newcastle and the Newcastle Mission
to Seafarers.
Library Manager David Jenkins says the partnership is a practical solution to disposing of decommissioned books.
“This is a win-win situation. Council is able to dispose of decommissioned books and the Mission can help the many people that pass through our port every year.”
Chaplain to the Port of Newcastle, The Reverend Garry Dodd, agrees this is a great outcome for all involved.
“Every year approximately 40,000 seafarers from 2000 vessels arrive in Newcastle. These sailors work long hours in cramped conditions and are at sea for many months at a time.
“We try and alleviate these conditions by supplying bundles of books and magazines. Stories which entertain and inspire, hobbies which engross and encourage talent and learning of all sorts, to enlighten and motivate, are ideal companions when the sailors are out at sea.”
The arrangement will be in place for 12 months and the Mission will collect items on a weekly basis. Each year, Newcastle Region Libraries decommission more than 20,000 books.
