Early Learning Centre sows seeds of sustainability

Campbelltown City Council’s Amarina Early Learning Centre has won an award for excellence by teaching young children and families in Airds how to save energy.

Amarina was awarded in the energy category of the New South Wales Sustainable Projects Outstanding Practice Awards (SPROuts) in July this year, recognising the Centre’s efforts to reduce energy consumption and in educating both children and families in sustainability.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Councillor Sue Dobson, congratulated the centre on its award and praised Council’s commitment to sustainable practices in the provision of its Education and Care Services.

“By incorporating energy saving into the children’s day to day routines and extended learning, caring for the environment becomes part of the ‘norm’,” Cr Dobson said.

“Children at the centre model their educators’ behaviour and actions to reduce energy use, and then take this message home, which has enormous social and environmental benefits.

“This outstanding achievement by Amarina Early Learning Centre highlights Council’s commitment to sowing the seeds for a healthier and stronger community,” Cr Dobson added.

The SPROuts Awards are supported by NSW Early Childhood Education Network and the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water. The awards aim to promote the integration of sustainable practices into the operations and curriculum of Early Childhood services in NSW.
