Council springs into Masters Games

The Alice Springs Masters Games, known as ‘The Friendly Games’, is held every second year and attracts up to 4000 competitors to the town.

The Alice Springs Town Council has a long history of supporting the Masters Games, contributing both financially and with in-kind support. The town, the sporting facilities and the public venues are all prepared and diligently maintained by the Council works team.

Not only does Council prepare for and assist in the running of the Games, they also participate. And 2012 saw a swag of medals collected by elected members, the CEO and staff.

The Alice Springs Council team took home more than 10 medals in events ranging from mountain biking, dirt biking, running, walking, hockey and table tennis.
Mayor Damien Ryan, a silver and bronze medallist said, “There’s something special about the Alice Springs Masters Games and I think it’s that the competitiveness on the field is matched only by the friendliness off field!”

Council CEO and gold medal winner Rex Mooney said, “The Masters Games are very important for our local economy and the Alice Springs Town Council team does an excellent job at keeping the sporting fields and public facilities in top shape for this major sporting event.”

Participants come from all over Australia and the world to join the week-long event that utilises up to 20 Council sporting facilities, public venues and grounds.
