Five women, three generations and one creative family

Three generations of one family living at opposite tips of the country pooled their artistic talents to create an exhibition at Wyreena Gallery in Croydon, Melbourne.

Councillor Liam Fitzgerald said ‘Three Generations’ highlights how the creative gene can be passed on through the family.

“Family matriarch, Joy Buchanan, 92, has passed her love of art and craft down through the generations to her daughters and granddaughters – Helen, Anne, Ricky and Kate.

“Despite Kate living in Darwin and the rest of the family based in Melbourne, they continue to share their passion for art, continually talking about new techniques and experimenting with new art forms. Cr Fitzgerald said.

“The five artists have created a beautiful exhibition of handmade glass beads, silk painting, textiles and jewellery – with each artist putting their own personal touches on their pieces.

“For the past 30 years Joy has been creating silk paintings, in the traditional French drawing style which involves hand painting the silk with dye before steam setting the fabric.

“Helen has developed a particular love of textiles and glass and the exhibition demonstrated how masterfully the artist combined her love of both genres to create wearable art.

“Anne has created her own range of unique jewellery – including making each glass bead by hand resulting in no two being the same.

“Kate, who lives in Darwin, is also an experienced glass bead maker, learning the technique from her mother, Helen. It is sharing a love of art that Kate says keeps her connected with her family,” Cr Fitzgerald said.
