Message from the Mayor

The Southern Highlands is truly a wondrous place.

As Mayor of Wingecarribee Shire, I need not look far to remind myself how fortunate our region is.

Our Shire is home to natural marvels such as Wombeyan Caves and the spectacular Fitzroy, Carrington and Belmore Falls which cascade from sandstone cliffs deep into our valley floors.

Renowned athletes have called our towns and villages home for years.  In fact, the great Sir Donald Bradman spent many years in Bowral during his youth, and around the corner from his childhood home – and immediately adjacent to Bradman Oval – now resides the acclaimed International Cricket Hall of Fame.

But it’s not just world-class athletes that call our Shire home.

Artists and authors have long sought inspiration in the Southern Highlands including Mary Poppins creator, the late PL Travers, who lived only a few streets away from the world’s greatest cricketer.

Chefs and restaurateurs have also long made use of the region’s bountiful harvests and in recent years more viticulturalists have discovered our fertile fields are perfect for cool climate wines.

The distinct seasons of our region also lend themselves to our annual Tulip Time floral celebrations.  Now running for more than 50 years, each September and October our Shire’s towns and village gardens burst into colour with thousands of tulips.

Be it history and attractions, scenery and natural beauty, sport and recreation, gardens and parks, arts and culture, food or wine; the Southern Highlands really does offer something for everyone.

This year both Moss Vale and Bowral, two of our Shire’s main towns, celebrate their Sesquicentenary – or 150th birthday – celebrations.

In conjunction with the community, Council has organised a year long program of events celebrating these historic milestones.
