‘Island Home’ celebrated

The 2013 Mackay Festival of Arts program ‘My Island Home’ was launched in May with a celebration at the Botanic Gardens South Sea Islander Meeting Hut.

Free family concerts, international dance acts and renowned Australian performers will feature in the Festival.

Speaking at the launch, Mackay Regional Council Mayor Deirdre Comerford said residents would be proud of the quality acts headlining this year’s Festival.

“My Island Home celebrates our cultural heritage and recognizes the 150th anniversary since the importation of indentured labour from the South Sea Islands into Queensland.”

Island Weaving Workshops and a guided tour of historical sites are some of the Festival events which will shine a spotlight on the Australian South Sea Islander story, their achievements, culture and contribution to the community.

Neil Murray, the original composer of the song ‘My Island Home’, delighted guests at the launch with a special performance and will return to Mackay with Northern Territory artists the Tjupi Band to officially open the Festival of Arts on July 6th.

Councillor Comerford said the 16-day Festival would appeal to all ages with music, art, dance, theatre and comedy set in a variety of stunning venues across the region.

“The Festival will entertain and inspire our community.”

Festival, Events and The Arts portfolio Councillor Chris Bonanno said the Festival would not be possible without the support of local businesses, volunteers and artists.

“I encourage everyone to venture out and enjoy the largest regional arts festival in Queensland.”
