City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of $10 million for the Regional Aquatic and Recreational Facility in Cockburn Central West.
The then Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited an oval near the proposed site in June with Councillor Howlett and the Fremantle Dockers Football Club (FDFC).
Councillor Howlett said the partnership between the FDFC and the City of Cockburn was set to provide an unparalleled range of sporting and community assets for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy.
The $10 million represents a significant contribution to the project and is a milestone in the journey to build a state of the art sport and recreation facility for the entire region. The money is being provided through the Regional Development Australia Fund, Round 4.
Councillor Howlett said the facilities would be the envy of every other community facility in Australia.
“The City maintains the position that this project will be shaped by Cockburn’s enthusiastic community with a focus on meeting their needs well into the future, and contributions received from the Commonwealth and WA Governments.
“The City owes a special thank you to Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke who worked tirelessly to ensure Federal funding for this project.
“Council is yet to consider the Business Plan and the Structure Plan for the site, with these to come back to Council in July. As with all of the City’s projects, Council will consider these matters carefully to ensure a financially prudent decision is made.
“The Federal Government’s decision to fund this project is a win-win situation for every Cockburn ratepayer. They will have an integrated recreation facility for our region that will incorporate the latest technology in the growing and vibrant part of our City in Cockburn Central.”
