Greening Strathfieldsaye

Members of the community have joined the City of Greater Bendigo in planting over 4,000 native trees and shrubs along Sheepwash Creek in Strathfieldsaye to celebrate National Tree Day 2013.

National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Each year over 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at thousands of sites organised by councils, schools, businesses and communities.

The 2013 local planting activities were part of a milestone, as the 20 millionth seedling was planted since the event began in 1996.

City of Greater Bendigo CEO Craig Niemann said the site was chosen because it is an important recreation and conservation corridor and the tree planting would support the great work that has already been undertaken by the Sheepwash Creek Landcare Group.

“The planting will improve the amenity and natural values of this area and will build upon other revegetation works that have taken place along the creek.”
In addition to the planting, children’s art activities were on offer and a free barbecue provided for all participants.

Mr Niemann said each year the City of Greater Bendigo partnered with a different local Landcare or community group to help coordinate a planting on a community site.

“I would like to thank the Sheepwash Creek Landcare Group and the Strathfieldsaye & Districts Community Enterprise for being our partners this year and for all the valuable work they do for their local community.”
