The recently announced Westmead Alliance of Parramatta’s major health and research institutions has received a welcome boost from neighbouring Holroyd City.
Holroyd City Council Mayor Ross Grove met with Parramatta City Council Lord Mayor John Chedid this week to commit the city’s support to the newly formed Westmead Alliance.
The city leaders met at the two-lane bridge that joins their municipalities and creates a critical bottleneck for access to the Westmead biomedical precinct.
Councillor Grove said the Westmead Alliance recognised that infrastructure was required that was sympathetic to the growing requirements of the population.
“As the largest medical precinct in the southern hemisphere, Westmead provides not only a lot of services to residents, but is also a key source of employment with over 1,500 locals identifying hospitals as their place of employment.
“We are advocating for a three-lane expansion of the Bridge Road Bridge, upgrades to the intersection of Hawkesbury Road and Darcy Road, and enhancements to the green corridors surrounding the area.”
Along with six medical stakeholders, Councillor Chedid said Parramatta City Council was buoyed by Holroyd’s involvement in the campaign.
“The success of Australia’s fastest growing biomedical precinct will only occur if we work together, and Holroyd’s support is greatly appreciated.
“Together we are calling for the Federal and State Governments to prioritise the precinct and invest now to provide the precinct with the vital transport links and infrastructure it requires.”
The Westmead Alliance includes Parramatta City Council, the Western Sydney Local Health District, The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, Westmead Millennium Institute, Children’s Medical Research Institute, Westmead Private Hospital and the University of Sydney.
Cr Chedid said that as Australia’s population ages and the demand for health care grows, Westmead will become increasingly vital to meeting the nation’s demands for health care.
