Council updates fleet policy

Significant cost saving actions have been identified and incorporated into Baw Baw Shire Council’s updated Motor Vehicle Fleet Policy.

The results of the 2011 Independent Fleet Review identified a number of actions that will improve fleet efficiencies across many areas, resulting in reduced expenditure in both the short- and long-terms.

Updates to the former 2008 Motor Vehicle Fleet Policy include:

  • reduction in whole-of-life costs
  • fleet reduction initiatives
  • greater control of vehicle selection
  • provision of fit-for-purpose vehicles
  • greater options for vehicle packaging
  • requirement for vehicle branding
  • vehicle safety requirements (Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating, minimum safety specifications and driver assistance devices)
  • Council’s environmental impact targets in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 outputs.

Director Community Assets Phil Cantillon said the policy changes would result in a safe, environmentally responsible fleet, while reducing Council’s overall costs.

“Council is committed to ensuring we are being financially responsible when it comes to running our fleet.

“Vehicles are used for the primary purpose of assisting staff to perform Council business. We only provide vehicles to staff where it is absolutely necessary and employees with a fleet vehicle contribute financially to the use of the car.

“Another important aspect of the updated policy is around supporting local supply for our fleet. The policy changes will have a positive impact on local dealers and parts suppliers. Purchasing locally supplied vehicles is an important part of our decision making process and where possible we will purchase through the local dealer network, provided supply is financially responsible.

“The reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will assist Council in becoming more environmentally sustainable.”
