City of Canada Bay wins national sustainability award

The City of Canada Bay has won the “Water Conservation” Award at the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Sustainable Cities Awards, 2013.

Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said winning the national award for their ‘Water for Our Community’ project was a fantastic result.

“This project provides an alternative supply of irrigation for the community’s 220 hectares of open space via a water harvesting system. It is one of the most innovative projects in NSW and it’s fantastic to be recognised nationally.”

Mayor Tsirekas said the City of Canada Bay was also highly commended in the Heritage and Culture and Young Legends categories.

“We won the NSW Overall Sustainable Cities Council Award earlier this year and it was an honour to represent NSW at the national awards and even better to be recognised with these wins.”

The Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities program provided a platform to showcase the City’s achievements on a local, state and national level.

“We competed against six other finalists from around the country for the title of Overall Australian Sustainable City and were up against some great competition. Our community should feel very proud.”

Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) is the national peak body on litter prevention. With over four decades of experience in engaging Australians to care for their local environments, (not to be confused with the organisation Clean Up Australia Day) KAB Programs include Sustainable Cities, Tidy Towns, Clean Beaches, National Litter Index, The LITTLE Committee, National Bin Network and Keep Australia Beautiful Week in August.
