Innovative biomass boiler

The Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre Biomass Boiler has been awarded the 2014 South Australian Aquatic Innovation Award.

City of Mount Gambier Director Operational Services, Daryl Sexton said he is delighted that Council’s innovative approach has been recognised.

“Not only is the new system more cost effective compared to running a gas system; it supports the local economy through the sourcing of biomass feedstock from the forestry industry, and uses a carbon neutral fuel source – wood chips from local plantations that are regrown.

“The new boiler has contributed to an increase in pool customers this season, with many regulars commenting on the great performance of the system.”

Recreation SA, the peak industry body for the aquatics, fitness and health, community recreation and outdoor sectors in South Australia, coordinates the Award.

It recognises practices, facilities, training or services that are exceptionally innovative within the South Australian aquatic industry.

Mr Sexton said Mount Gambier was unique in adopting this visionary approach at the Aquatic Centre, which is the first in Australia to have its pools heated by a biomass boiler.

He also said Council was proud to be able to support local industry throughout this project.

The award was announced at the recent Gala Dinner and Awards night as part of the 2014 Recreation and Parks Conference in Adelaide.
