Mid-Western Regional Council residents now have the opportunity to tune into council meetings, which will now be broadcast live online.
Mid-Western Regional Council will utilise new technology to engage residents and enable anyone to see what’s discussed and decided at a meeting.
General Manager Brad Cam says the technology will be well used.
“The community has clearly shown that this is something they want, and so Council has made the significant investment to offer webcasting of meetings.
“Like residents and Councillors, I’m looking forward to having the option available.
“It is an open and transparent way to show how Council works.
“Decisions are made publicly at Council meetings which often involve robust discussion and debate.
“Each side of every decision is considered before the Councillors vote on what they consider the best option for the entire Mid-Western Region.
“In Council meetings, the Councillors who have been elected by the community make decisions about the activities of Council, and these decisions are then put into action by Council staff.
“It’s this process that I’m keen for residents and community members to see for themselves.
“Unfortunately, many people don’t understand how local government works which limits the opportunities for them to be involved.
“I hope that once the community can see proceedings without having to attend the meeting, there will be a greater understanding of the governance of Council.”
Webcasting of the meeting will be available online as soon as Open Day has finished.
Open Day provides an opportunity for any member of the community to address the Council and starts at 5.30pm on the Wednesday of a Council Meeting.
The official starting time of each Council meeting will vary depending on the number of speakers at Open Day.
A recording of each meeting will be available online by the following Monday.
