Climate Adaption 2014 Future Challenges National Conference

The Gold Coast has hosted the Climate Adaption 2014 – Future Challenges National Conference.

Professor Jean Palutikof, Director, National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility and Dr Paul Hardisty, Director CSIRO Land and Water Flagship headed the conference.

The event showcased the growing body of climate change adaptation knowledge both in Australia and around the globe.

It demonstrated how the knowledge is being used by communities, governments and industry to adapt to the impacts of climate change, the contribution of adaptation science to planning and policy making across Australia, and how robust adaptation decisions can be made in the face of uncertainty.

Local Government was well represented at the conference, with President of Australian Local Government Association and Mayor of City of Marion, Felicity-Ann Lewis, presenting in the Panel Session ‘Delivering on the ground actions: Moving out of the planning phase’.

Pam Robinson, Environment and Climate Change Strategic Planner at the City of Palmerston, represented the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) at the event.

Dr Debra Roberts, Deputy Head, Development Planning, Environment & Management Unit, Environmental Planning & Climate Protection, Durban, was a keynote speaker in the opening plenary ‘International perspectives on climate adaptation’.

Dr Roberts established and heads the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department of eThekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa, and a world leader in urban open space planning, environmental management and urban climate protection
