Leading and Embracing Diversity

VicHealth and the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) will be hosting a forum titled Leading and Embracing Diversity: Strategies to Reduce Race-based Discrimination.

The health impacts of race-based discrimination include increased risk of psychological distress and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

Race-based discrimination is also linked to smoking, obesity, alcohol and substance abuse, and cardiovascular disease.

At a community level race-based discrimination and intolerance can lead to tension and conflict and undermine business confidence.

Many organisations have contributed to building knowledge and practice in this area.

The forum will profile these organisations, new evidence and promising strategies which are focused on supporting cultural diversity and reducing race-based discrimination in arts, sports, workplace, training and local government settings.

VicHealth will also be releasing two publications at the forum: Findings from the 2013 Victorians’ Attitudes to Race and Cultural Diversity Survey and the Localities Embracing and Accepting Diversity (LEAD) Program Summary Report.

The forum will provide an opportunity to expand networks and build understanding of practical approaches to reduce race-based discrimination and promote cultural diversity.

The forum will be held on Monday 8 December 2014 at 9.00am at the ANZ Pavilion, Arts Centre Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road.

RSVPs can be made before Monday 1 December online.
