There were plenty of blisters, aching muscles and a dash of exhaustion, but there were certainly no complaints from Team Logan City.
Council staff and community members teamed up for the physically challenging Rio Tinto Conquer Cancer bike ride and Weekend to End Women’s Cancer walk and with the fundraising just completed, there are 70,000 reasons to smile.
Between August’s bike ride event and last month’s walking marathon, the team raised $70,000 for the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital Foundation.
Team Logan city entered 14 riders in the 200km two-day Brisbane to Lake Wivenhoe and back bike ride in August while eight female members took part in the 60km two-day walk through Brisbane.
Deputy Mayor and Team Logan City bike ride team captain Councillor Russell Lutton said the riders chalked up just over $51,000 while the walkers raised almost $19,000. Captain of Team Logan City’s Weekend to End Women’s Cancer walk line-up was Karen Tattersall.
“This is an absolutely remarkable commitment from not only every team member, but from our great community who dug deep and not only sponsored us, but also provided the moral support we needed.
“While the riders had to battle the wind and rain in their two-day event in August, the walkers had to contend with a hot Brisbane weekend and certainly had the blisters to prove it.”
With a personal fundraising tally of more than $15,000, Cr Lutton was the seventh highest fundraiser for the ride component of the fundraising endeavour while his team was the seventh highest fundraiser in the ride from field of more than 100 teams.
“For Team Logan City to raise $70,000 from two events shows speaks volumes about the dedication and commitment of each of these individuals who worked so hard, pushing themselves physically and mentally to help provide much-needed funds for cancer research,” he said.
“Council was approached by the event organisers and we agreed they were initiatives we wanted to throw our weight behind.
“All Team Logan City members have trained for the past six months and have had a lot of fun doing so, improving our general health and fitness at the same time.
“It has been a fantastic experience and I would like to congratulate each and every member for their wonderful efforts.”
