South Australian Councils have been named Climate Change Champions for the second year in a row.
Four South Australian Cities (Onkaparinga, Holdfast Bay, Marion and Mitcham) have won the national champion title at the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF) Awards for their partnership in the Resilient South project.
Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) President, Mayor David O’Loughlin said the award was proof that SA Local Governments are demonstrating best practice.
“For South Australian climate change projects and partnerships to again be recognised for leading the charge is a huge accolade for the work being done in Local Government.”
Resilient South, which includes collaboration between the four Councils, the State and Federal governments business and community organisations, is developing a Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the southern
Adelaide region.
“The collaborative leadership by the three spheres of government and the involvement of community groups and businesses is the key to success.
“SA Councils have demonstrated terrific leadership in this important environmental area and South Australia is seeing the results of empowering local leaders to manage the real risks of climate change.”
NCCARF Director, Professor Jean Palutikof congratulated Resilient South on the Victory.
“NCCARF recognises the Resilient South initiative as an Adaptation
Champion in 2014 for demonstrating there is strength in numbers and that action to address climate change can deliver more resilient and sustainable Australian communities.”
