Mayor Lynette de Santis nominated Alice for her fantastic community support, Alice is the Office Manager at the council office in Milikapiti.
“She is always available to deal with community issues and is a ‘jack of all trades’, from dispensing fuel for council and the community, to ensuring timesheets are submitted.”
Alice began her employment with Council at Bathurst Island in August 2005 for a two–year contract under Sports and Recreation.
“I am of Tiwi Islander descent on my Mothers side, belonging to the Munupi Clan group.
“I left the islands as a child in 1964 going back to Darwin with my parents.
“I spent my growing up years in Darwin and did not return until 2005 with the opportunity to return to the Island as the Sport and recreation Manager.
“This position was responsible for actively providing support to community health and wellbeing through provision of sport, leisure, recreation and after-school programs for the Tiwi Islands communities.”
Alice continued her employment with Sport and Recreation on Bathurst Island up to 2008 before being transferred to Milikapiti Community on Melville Island as the Sport and Recreation Manager.
In 2009 she was seconded from that position to Office Manager whilst still managing Sports and Recreation.
“In 2011 with the sad passing of our Director Maurice Rioli I was promoted as Regional Manager for Sports and Recreation covering the three communities whilst continuing as Office Manger for a short period.”
Milikapiti has 450 residents, and Alice’s position entails the responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective and efficient office systems, processes and work practices, as well as meeting the needs of Community residents.
“What I like most about my job is seeing Tiwi people achieving by taking up roles previously held by Non Tiwi, and being recognised and accredited nationally.
“Also giving children the opportunity to travel interstate for sporting activities, allowing them to develop a wider understanding of the world.
“Key challenges of my role are to instill a belief and confidence that Tiwi people have the same abilities that non-Tiwi people have, to take up roles within Government, and ‘to do myself out of a job’, ensuring a succession of Tiwi Staff.
“A specific success I have had was the opportunity to mentor two young Tiwi people, and watching them succeed in gaining qualifications leading on to continued full time employment.”
