Underboring works begin on new water pipeline

Higher quality water for Burdekin Shire Council residents in Ayr and Brandon is a step closer with the commencement of underboring operations at Rossiters Hill.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis said Council’s contractor, Bothar Boring and Tunnelling, had established themselves on site and began underbore operations on the new 4km Ayr-Brandon water supply pipeline.

“Bothar is contracted to underbore the Bruce Highway and Queensland Rail main line.

“We are underboring the road and rail for a distance of 146m from Rossiters Hill towards Mirrigan Road in an effort to reduce the impact of the works on road and rail traffic.

“Bothar also have been contracted to install the 450mm diameter water main, which is enveloped in concrete pipe, in this particular section of the new pipeline.”

Cr Lowis said Council had already completed the installation of the 450mm water main from the South Ayr Treatment Plant to the Plantation Creek Crossing and that the current works were due to be completed by March 5.

“Once construction is finished in early March, the line will be tested before being commissioned by March 31.”

Cr Lowis said the $2.225 million project would end the problems caused by high levels of iron and manganese in the water supply.
