Councils celebrate diverse cultures

Councils will embrace and celebrate community members from diverse heritages during Cultural Diversity Week from March 14-22.

Councils will be holding many cultural events including festivals, ceremonies, art exhibitions and cultural food events.

Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) President, Cr Bill McArthur said holding festive events was just one of the many ways councils were embracing the mix of cultures in communities.

“Every day councils are working towards creating inclusive communities and providing services for people from all backgrounds.

“Cultural Diversity Week (CDW) is a chance for councils to showcase the work they do on a day-to-day basis, by celebrating the diverse mix of residents that make up their communities.

“Councils also get involved in Harmony Day and hold events ranging from morning teas to large festivals, and a Taste of Harmony where colleagues are encouraged to share food from their cultural background.

“This is an important week for all communities to be reminded that no matter a person’s ethnicity, religious beliefs, or language spoken, they are included in the wider community.

“Councils are at the forefront of multiculturalism, being the closest level of government to the community, so it’s important they understand the issues faced by people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

“Participation in CDW is just one of the ways councils are working towards reducing discrimination and racism.

“Over 100 Australian councils are now Refugee Welcome Zones, including 36 in Victoria.

“Victorian councils have also joined the Racism It Stops With Me campaign, along with the MAV.

“Discrimination can have damaging effects on individuals and communities, but it is positive to see councils working collaboratively with communities to end this behaviour.

“We look forward to working with councils in the multicultural and diversity space, as they continue to embrace all cultures and ensure all residents are welcome.”
