Harmony Day 2015

Councils across Australia are celebrating the 15th annual Harmony Day this Saturday, March 21 2015.

Harmony Day encourages Australians to celebrate cultural diversity.

It is also the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Services, Senator the Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said that this year’s Harmony Day is about 15 years of sharing the message that we all belong.

“Our cultural diversity remains one of our greatest strengths.

“It’s at the heart of who we are.

“We live in one of the most socially cohesive nations on earth.

“We express a sense of belonging almost unanimously.

“This however hasn’t come about by chance.

“It has been built through our strong migrant history.

“Almost half of us were born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas.”

Councils will be celebrating the event with many different events including morning teas, fairs and concerts.
