Councillor profiles – This month from Liverpool City Council, NSW

Great South West
The capital of the Great South West, Liverpool is one of the most diverse places in the country with over 140 languages spoken in our homes, streets, workplaces and communities.

We’re the gateway city to Sydney’s second international airport to be built at Badgerys Creek, which will create 20,000 jobs in our region.

We are at the forefront of advancements in health and medical research.

In our city centre alone, 6,500 people are employed in the health and education sector and we house an internationally pioneering cancer research facility the Ingham Institute; the leading national trauma centre attached to Liverpool Hospital; and the South West Institute of TAFE.

We’re also growing. We are one of the fastest growing regions in NSW and our population is set to almost double in the next 20 years.

Tremendous growth
Liverpool Council has a number of innovative projects underway.

We have begun work on Building Our New City, our CBD revitalisation strategy developed by some of the country’s best city planners, which will see key civic places like our mall and city park revitalised.

Plans include a riverside Boardwalk and shared pathways to connect the city with the Georges River.

Work has begun on an innovative $30 million community facility in the new suburb of Carnes Hill that includes a library, recreation centre and sporting fields.

In 2014 we installed CCTV and free WI-FI in our city centre, becoming one of the first councils to do this.

We also run a diverse range of large-scale community events and our Night Markets, designed to stimulate the local nighttime economy and bring our CBD to life.

It has become a much-loved event since launching in May 2014.

There’s so much going for Liverpool, but with this promise also comes the responsibility to get things right.

For us, it’s about making sure we are working now to be ready for the tremendous growth that we know is coming thanks to the airport and new housing and infrastructure that’s being built.

To this end, we recently formed a Committee for Liverpool which combines bright minds and industry leaders to provide a guiding light on key decisions that need to be taken at all levels of Government and in the private sector.

Working to achieve
I have been a Councillor since 2008 and Mayor since 2012.

I am extremely passionate about Liverpool and wanted to be at the coalface of shaping the future of our city and community.

There are a few key aspects of being a good councillor
It’s essential to have an open line of communication with the community, where regular and frank interaction can occur both ways.

You also need to have a strong vision for your community, and be prepared to fight for that vision, while also being open to the ideas of others.

Working to achieve great things with and for the community is the best thing about being a Mayor, especially in such a dynamic and growing city whose time has come.

The worst part is the time that is lost with my family, especially as my wife and I have two beautiful young boys.

The best advice I ever received was to surround yourself with good people.

I hope to leave Liverpool a better place than when I became Mayor – by ensuring we have a thriving city centre making use of our beautiful riverside lands, jobs for our residents so they don’t have to commute large distances, the right transport and infrastructure, and a strong and proud community.
