The Cootamundra Soil Recycling Facility (SRF) conducted a very successful open day for interested people to walk the site and have the process of soil remediation explained in detail.
The Waste Science Pty Ltd facility is the only one of its kind in Australia and offers a cost effective disposal option for hydrocarbon (fuel, oil and greases) and tar (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon or PAH’s) contaminated soils. With a licensed processing capacity of around 30,000 tonnes the facility is able to accept all classifications including Hazardous Soil. Attendees within the industry, council representatives from around the region and interested local organizations were all invited to attend.
Guests were taken on a tour of the facility and gained an insight into the process from delivery, through to remediation of the contaminated soil and saw examples of the finished product. Maxine Imrie manager of the Cootamundra SRF explained the procedures and day to day operation whilst managing director Mr Phil Mulvey described the intricacies of the science used and, for some of the guests provided a trip down memory lane with, an interesting history about gas works and the products produced.
The SRF is currently remediating over 16,000 tonnes of soil from the Wagga Wagga and Molong Gas Works, service stations and fuel depots both locally and from the ACT and tarry soil from oyster farms projects along with other material from various locations across NSW.
The tour ended with refreshments and an overview of the Waste Science Pty Ltd visions for the future by Waste Science manager Mr Ross Williams. Guests were impressed and had high praise for the work being done, and the contribution the facility has to the local Cootamundra economy.
