The Town of Victoria Park has provided an illuminating experience for community members and junior sporting clubs, with the launch of six new floodlighting towers at Raphael Park.
With $137,000 of the $550,000 cost funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation through its Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), the project delivers a significant upgrade to the previous three lighting towers used to light part of the reserve.
The floodlighting upgrade directly delivers on the main objective of CSRFF, which is to increase participation in sport and recreation, with an emphasis on physical activity, through the development of good quality and well-designed infrastructure.
The project has improved opportunity for a significant number of people to access the park during the evening, particularly the 280 members of the Vic Park Rovers Junior Soccer Club and the 420 members of the South Perth Junior Cricket Club.
At a special launch event, Mayor Trevor Vaughan flipped the switch and lit up the park with several community groups and clubs in attendance.
“With increased lighting comes increased participation in sport, more of the park can be used for longer periods of time.
“The whole reserve can now be played on at night and this will spread the wear and tear more evenly across the grounds and provide better match-play turf for the clubs.
“The Town and community are incredibly grateful for the significant contribution from the Department of Sport and Recreation.”
The project was completed ahead of schedule and lights can be used at quarter or half capacity to make better use of resources and save on energy and power.
