The Shire of East Pilbara and BHP Billiton recently partnered in a project that aimed to provide a safer environment through the use of high quality, low energy, cost effective LED lighting technology.
The Shire of East Pilbara has installed 114 walkway and exercise node lights that utilise solar energy.
Allen Cooper, Chief Executive Officer, Shire of East Pilbara, said the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
“More people are out exercising, or just out and about on the paths of an evening, when it is cooler.
“Feelings of personal safety are up and anti-social behaviour, where lights have been installed, is down.
“You could not ask for a better end result.”
Paul Dickson, Manager Community Safety at the Shire of East Pilbara, said that the goals of making the area safer and encouraging greater participation of residents have both been met.
“By utilising solar energy, of which we have plenty, the lights are very environmentally friendly and the blue colour scheme has been well received and adds a bit of variety to the landscape.”
Mr Dickson also added that consideration would be given to installing additional lights in the future within the Shire of East Pilbara.
