Thousands enjoy new sporting hub

More than 2,500 people enjoyed Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Community Open Day at the Shire’s new recreation and sporting hub at Civic Reserve Recreation Centre.

Event ambassador and basketballer Andrew Gaze attracted huge crowds, hosting basketball competitions and signing hundreds of autographs including signing tops, shoes, caps and of course basketballs for young fans and local players.

With perfect weather the free amusement rides, face painting and food sample give-aways from the regular suppliers to the Civic Reserve cafe were very popular with the public enjoying everything from a free local apple to a sample of nudie juice.

Resident sporting clubs presented demonstrations or workshop activities, which were full of enthusiastic locals giving basketball, table tennis, gymnastics and tennis a go throughout the afternoon.

Civic Reserve Recreation Centre provides a variety of exercise programs for all ages and abilities, a gymnasium and child care centre and all were featured on the day with crowds sampling new activities.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said that the Council is very pleased to see its local community and clubs enjoying the new facility.

“It was just wonderful to see so many people getting active and enjoying themselves.

“Civic Reserve Recreation Centre has so much to offer our local community, and is also home to the Mornington Tennis Club, Mornington Youth Club, Gymnastics, and the Mornington Peninsula Table Tennis Association.

“I encourage the local community who couldn’t attend on the day to visit the facility and find out about the wonderful programs and sports clubs on offer.”
