Concept designs for a revamp of City Square in the CBD have been given a tick of approval by Coffs Harbour City Council.
“It’s great to see this crucial upgrade project move on to the next stage,” said Rod McKelvey, Chair of the CBD Masterplan Committee.
“City Square is fundamental to the revitalisation of the city centre as a whole.
“Its final design themes, and the quality of those designs, will set the overall tone for the whole precinct, so it’s really important that we get it right.”
Flexibility is the core principal of the adopted concept designs, to provide a space that can cater for large events such as World Rally gatherings, to smaller community events and the popular Coffs Coast Growers Market.
In the concept plans, the existing alfresco dining areas of the square would be enhanced with new mature shade trees and intimate canopies.
The centre of the square would also be filled with mobile planter boxes providing shade and seating.
At the southern end of the square, a roof structure would provide shelter from the elements. There are also ideas and suggestions for improvements to seating, lighting, car park facades, landscaping and shade structures.
“The aim is to create a friendly and welcoming space which is flexible, sophisticated and vibrant, but also relaxed and peaceful,” said Mr McKelvey.
A detailed construction plan is now to be prepared, following further consultation with CBD retailers and property-owners.
