The Australian Government is revitalising Darwin with $3.74 million invested to rebuild The Esplanade in the city centre, with works commencing earlier this week.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said that The Esplanade had suffered structural damage, so investing to rebuild now will be building solid infrastructure for the future of Darwin.
“This project is being funded under the Australian Government’s $3.2 billion Roads to Recovery Programme, which is supporting local infrastructure projects nationwide that facilitate improved social, economic and safety outcomes for Australia.”
Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs said residents, local businesses and visitors would all benefit from the reconstructed road.
“The Esplanade will be a brighter, better street with more shade trees, energy efficient lighting and more bike and foot paths.”
Acting Lord Mayor City of Darwin George Lambrinidis said there would be no ideal time to reconstruct a major city centre, but contractors would need to start during dry season to finish works before the heavy rain begins.
“We are delighted to have had support from the Australian Government in delivering this important project.
“The City of Darwin will work with residents and businesses to reduce the impact of the works.”
Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2015.
