A coconut-water fuelled comedian arrived in the Wellesley Islands for Mornington Shire Council NAIDOC celebrations; encouraging residents to laugh their guts out and keep Gununa culture strong.
Sean Choolburra, recognised as an Australian icon and deadly indigenous comedy act, entertained over 250 locals through a series of remixes, dance grooves and didgeridoo workshops.
After thanking the Traditional Owners of the land, Choolburra announced NAIDOC award recipients including Councillor Bobby Thompson and well respected local Westie Binjari, before entertaining residents into the night.
The afternoon was a vibrant collage of music and art that featured traditional dance performed by island children alongside local song man Lawrence Burke and a public performance from Lenny’s Deadly Band.
Mayor Brad Wilson says Council recognises the importance of celebrating NAIDOC, preserving culture and encouraging participation in a healthy social setting.
“The event was a success and was greatly supported by the Royal Flying Doctors Service Australia, as well as generous island organisations like the Gununamanda Store.
“The crew of volunteers in the Mornington Island Rural Fire Brigade set the afternoon skies ablaze with a large bonfire; while stories of our connection to this great land were passed around.
“It was a memorable evening for all.”
