It was announced yesterday that Bendigo-based manufacturer Thales Australia had won a $1.3 billion Federal Government contract to build over 1000 Hawkei armoured vehicles.
Greater Bendigo City Council Mayor, Councillor Peter Cox, described the day as a “ticker tape day” for the city.
At the announcement ceremony attended by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull yesterday, Cr Cox said, “You hear people claiming that manufacturing is dead in Australia. Well, it’s alive and thriving in Bendigo.
“The Prime Minister’s announcement is fantastic news for our region. It secures a future for the employees at Thales in Bendigo and it further builds on our city’s reputation as a hub for high quality manufacturing.”
The manufacturing sector is worth around $2.2billion to the City and contributes around 6,936 direct and indirect jobs to the Greater Bendigo economy.
