Volunteers who have dedicated years of service to the Melville community were recognised at the City’s annual Neighbourhood Stars event at the City of Melville Civic Centre on Friday 20 November.
City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said every year the City thanked its volunteers by hosting this special event in their honour.
“We are fortunate to have so many community-minded people who generously and enthusiastically give their time to others, and this is our way of recognising the significant contribution they make to our community every day.”
More than 230 volunteers attended the Australian outback-themed evening, enjoying a barbeque supper and entertainment from the Wadumbah Dance Group, as well as acoustic soloist Chris Gibbs.
The evening saw 40 volunteers formally recognised with the presentation of the Mayor’s Valued Citizen Awards and Youth Citizenship Awards.
Recipients of this award are long serving volunteers in the Melville community, in an unpaid role for 10 years or more.
“Congratulations and thank you to all our recipients in 2015 – volunteering is a selfless gift that connects people, makes a difference to individual lives and strengthens our neighbourhoods,” Mayor Aubrey said.
“This year we received a record number of nominations and honour a record number of volunteers, which shows us that volunteering is alive and blooming in our community. Our local organisations love this opportunity to thank their volunteering stars.”
