Fairfield City’s 900th citizenship ceremony

Fairfield City Council will hold its 900th citizenship ceremony as part of a special Australia Day Ceremony on Friday 22 January 2016.

The first Australian citizenship ceremony was held in Canberra on 3 February 1949. The first naturalisation ceremony for the Fairfield municipality was on 16 July 1954 with eight new Australians. In 62 years, an estimated 90,000 people have taken their pledge in Fairfield City to become Australians.

More than 1,000 new citizens make their Australian Citizenship Pledge at Fairfield City Citizenship Ceremonies each year – the final step in becoming a citizen. Council hosts citizenship ceremonies about once a month, with up to 100 people taking their pledge together.

This citizenship ceremony is an important opportunity to officially welcome a special number of new citizens to the Australian community, while celebrating all that have become Australian’s before them.

Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone said this will be an extra special ceremony and one to remember for the 10 new Australians who we will welcome at this 900th citizenship ceremony

“The timing of the 900th citizenship ceremony was fitting, considering it coincided with Australia Day events and awards.”

The Australia Day Community Awards recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of members of the community during the past 12 months and/or over a number of years.

“It is a wonderful occasion for our new citizens to see the remarkable achievements and contributions that some of our community members participate in to make Fairfield City a great place.”
