The Town of Port Hedland is calling for expressions of interest for volunteers to participate in a new Trash for Cash for Trash program.
In conjunction with Main Roads WA, the Town is running the program to enable clean-up of debris, rubbish and waste from designated roads.
Mayor Kelly Howlett said she was pleased that this program was being introduced and acknowledged that there are still many improvements to be made in reducing the amount of roadside rubbish in the town.
“I fully support this new initiative and encourage all interested groups and participants to register their interest to participate.”
Mayor Howlett acknowledge that the Town has rolled out some great campaigns this year including the ‘secure your load’ campaign and the free cargo net initiative as part of a wider community education to reduce the amount of litter that ends up near the roads.
“This next approach encourages community groups to get out and further clean-up roadsides and also earn some cash for their kitty as they go.
“This program is open for participation by community groups and associations who are incorporated and have their own public liability insurance.”
Groups must be able to comply with Main Roads traffic management arrangements and provide their own personal protection such as high visibility vests, closed in footwear, gloves and sun protection.
“Working with Main Roads WA, $20,000 has been made available with groups awarded $5 per bag of trash collected.
“The Town will coordinate for litter crews to pick up the bags that are collected and dispose of them at the landfill free of charge.”
The Mayor added that this would be a timely reminder for community members, road users and industry bodies to secure their open load on the backs of trailers, utes and trucks before every journey.
“Light rubbish such as paper, wrappers, packaging and plastic drink bottles should not be left on open trailers but should be bagged, baled or bundled for disposal at landfill.
