A think tank meeting in Bendigo tomorrow will gather local case studies to be used at a global conference on housing and sustainable urban development in South America later this year.
The think tank is being hosted by the City of Greater Bendigo, together with the Australian Chapter of the Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Human Settlements (EAROPH), which encourages excellence in planning and development.
The case studies from Bendigo will inform the United Nation’s Habitat III Conference to be held in Ecuador in October. The conference is held every 20 years and offers a unique opportunity to discuss the challenge of how cities, towns and villages are planned and managed.
City Strategy Manager, Trevor Budge, said that having Bendigo chosen to host the think tank highlighted the leading role the City is taking in sustainable urban planning.
“The case studies from Bendigo will inform a major UN conference that seeks to provide a framework for sustainable global urban development for the next two decades.
“EAROPH had the opportunity to meet anywhere in Australia. They deliberately chose Bendigo and central Victoria because they heard about the great things that are happening here in terms of economic development, urban design and how arts and culture are rejuvenating the city.”
Topics to be discussed include housing and the role of local government and urban design, CBD regeneration and the role of arts and culture in Bendigo’s economic development.
The think tank will also discuss the resources and opportunities for Harcourt, Castlemaine and Bendigo in building their economies, and ways in which these communities can work together for mutual benefit. The day will include a guided tour of Bendigo’s CBD, new housing developments, the Bendigo Art Gallery and the Ulumbarra Theatre.
