Summit success leads to business opportunities

An agricultural summit held recently in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River sparked discussions on collaboration and local issues.

More than 80 people attended the Margaret River Food and Agricultural Summit held at the Margaret River Education Campus last month.

The summit provided opportunity for producers, farmers and local businesses to consider new research and future threats and opportunities in the food sector at local, national and international levels.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River Chief Executive Officer Gary Evershed said the conference provided real outcomes with discussions around future business expansions and collaborations floated by a number of participants.

“The Summit was a fantastic event and exceeded all expectations.
“The Shire has received very positive feedback from both presenters and participants, who both have advised new learnings and industry insights as a result of the event.

“I’m also aware of a number of connections being made between attendees for the development of future business opportunities, which is a fantastic result.”

Mr Evershed said the Summit afforded Councillors and Shire officers an excellent opportunity to discuss food sector issues direct with growers, producers and food sector stakeholders.

“I think input provided by Shire officers was very well received by the audience and helped break down some of the complexities we face, particularly in regards to land planning and health legislation,” he said.

“Councillors and Shire officers also left more informed about the challenges faced by the food industry with the personal experiences shared by local farmers serving to be very enlightening.”

Deputy Shire President and food producer Councillor Kylie Kennaugh said she was most impressed by the quality and experience of speakers who presented on a diverse range of food sector topics.

“I have learnt so much from all of the speakers and was most impressed by the business’s that operate on our doorstep.

“I was also very pleased to make new contacts in the industry as well as have a chat to some of those that I deal with on a day to day basis and discuss things that we normally don’t consider doing in our normal business.

“So many doors opened and there are new opportunities awaiting – I am very excited.”
