Photography exhbition celebrates refugees

As part of Refugee Week celebrations, Brimbank City Council in Victoria has launched a photography exhibition showcasing its high-achieving residents from refugee backgrounds.

The exhibition, ‘Celebrating the lives of Brimbank refugees’, features photos and stories of local residents from countries including Vietnam, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Syria and Myanmar.

Chair of Brimbank Administrators John Watson unveiled the exhibition today, alongside Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Helen Kapalos.

“It is a pleasure to launch this photographic exhibition as part of Refugee Week 2016 celebrations,” said Mr Watson.

“The people featured in the exhibition live, study or work in Brimbank and display a strong sense of community spirit.

“They’re proud members of the Brimbank community and Council is pleased to shine a spotlight on their achievements, I encourage everyone visit and enjoy the exhibition.

“Council’s annual Refugee Week celebrations play an important role in increasing the broader community’s awareness of refugees’ experiences, and the many strengths refugees bring to Brimbank.”

Brimbank has been a declared Refugee Welcome Zone since 2002.
