Youth precinct upgrade

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has received a Lotterywest Grant for $1.393 million towards the redevelopment of the town’s Youth Precinct.

Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett presented the grant late last month.

Shire President Ian Earl welcomed the Premier together with Regional Development Minister Terry Redman and South West MLC Barry House at the local skate park.

Mr Earl thanked the Premier for his support over the past eight years enabling the completion of major infrastructure projects such as the redevelopment of Surfer’s Point, the Augusta Boat Harbour and Margaret River Perimeter Road.

“The population of our Shire is growing quickly,” said Mr Earl.
“The approval of a new public primary school at Rapid’s Landing really shows the growing need for facilities and services to cater for our increase in residents.

“We see the upgrade of our Youth Precinct as a vital step in providing a space dedicated to our young people.

“The precinct will give our youth the opportunity to take responsibility over the area and lead to some of them becoming our leaders of the future.”

The Youth Precinct project is estimated to be worth approximately $2.7 million, with Shire contributing $650,000 and Margaret River Lions pledging $25,000 towards the project.

Further funding partnerships are being sought through the Royalty for Regions South West Regional Grants Scheme, Department of Sport & Recreation, Stronger Communities Program and local community contributions.
