Celebrating seniors

Councils across Queensland have partnered with the Council of the Ageing (COTA) to deliver this year’s Seniors Week, which runs 13-21 August.

The week-long initiative aims to promote the value of older members of the community, increase their social activity, and help foster inter-generational relationships.

An estimated 500 events are scheduled across the state.

Gympie Regional Council is hosting a suite of events, including a Seniors Concert and Morning Tea, at which the Mayor will announce the Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Gympie Regional Libraries are also holding a range of events, from getting Tech Savvy and developing the skills and confidence to use technology, to ‘Finding your Senior’; and a beginner’s guide to researching your family history.

Bundaberg Regional Council has a similarly impressive timetable.

Community and Cultural Services portfolio spokesperson Councillor Judy Peters said many Council facilities including the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre, Bundaberg Regional Library and Childers Arts Space (CHARTS) would hold Seniors Week events.

“Seniors Week is an opportunity for all residents to celebrate the valued contributions seniors make within our community,” said Cr Peters.

“Council is pleased to support this terrific initiative by offering a range of events throughout the week including a Multicultural Intergenerational Concert at the Moncrieff on August 13, a Heritage Chat at Bundaberg Regional Library on August 15 and a free Seniors Week movie at the Moncrieff on August 17.

“Residents of all ages can also enjoy a morning tea and floor talk with glass artist Neriel Dobbs at the Fifty Shades of Glass exhibition at CHARTS on August 18.”
