Keeping Tasmania beautiful

Glamorgan Spring Bay Council is getting ready to welcome delegates from all over Tasmania at the next Keep Australia Beautiful Tasmania 2016 Sustainable Communities Awards.

The town of Triabunna was awarded the Overall Winner for Tasmania last year and went on to win the national Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns title as well.

Australian Tidy Towns judge Jill Grant said Triabunna has a strong investment in the future.

“This cohesive and innovative community on Tasmania’s east coast has turned itself from a period of economic and social adversity towards an optimistic future through integrated projects and creative collaborations that capitalise on the natural and cultural assets of the town and region.

“The combination of vision and guidance, provided by the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, and the dedicated and consistent efforts of community organisations and volunteers have resulted in numerous initiatives that preserve and enhance environmental quality, and celebrate and showcase Triabunna’s long history including its links to agriculture, fishing and forestry.”

Triabunna also won the national award for Environmental Sustainability.

The judges’ report acknowledged that Triabunna recognised its vulnerability to coastal hazards such as erosion, rising sea levels and inundation and has responded with a host of educational and practical activities in nature and water conservation and energy efficiency.

Also acknowledged was the Glamorgan Spring Bay Natural Resource Management Committee, a special committee of council comprising community volunteers and stakeholder representatives who oversee a range of initiatives including weed management, litter prevention and biodiversity protection.

After handing over the perpetual trophy to the next Tasmanian Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Communities winner in August, Triabunna will begin preparations for the National Awards in March.
