Better internet access improves services in the Territory

Major IT upgrades are being rolled out across West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) community offices, which will ensure more reliable access across the Northern Territory municipality.

The upgrades, which began in August, include the installation of high-speed, robust connections from the main WARC community offices in Gunbalanya, Warruwi, Minjilang and Maningrida back to the main network.

This is set to improve the services across all communities and will add voice and video communication capabilities between community offices to provide more reliable and faster access to systems and data.

Wi-Fi antennas are also being installed, which will connect most of the minor offices to the main community office, improving the services to the remote offices such as the Warruwi aged care, Jabiru pool, mechanical workshops, night patrol and more.

This is an ongoing implementation, which will take place over coming months.

WARC Information Technology Coordinator Greg Ward said the network upgrade will not only improve services to the offices, but it will also provide the opportunity to implement new technology such as the new phone systems which are also currently being installed.

West Arnhem Regional Council Executive Manager Corporate Services Valentin Markez said good access to internet is key to improving council’s business processes, streamline operations and reducing costs.

“The new phone systems such as new the VoIP (voice over IP) will also reduce communication costs,” he said.

Valentin wished to thank the Department of Housing and Community Development for assisting with the project.

Network upgrades in Minjilang and Warruwi offices will take place in the near future.
