An innovative new program introduced at the City of Parramatta Library is making technology more accessible to children.
The Technology Club program is giving children aged eight to twelve a chance to learn about coding, programming and creating robotics.
The free club ran as a pilot program at the library in September and proved so popular it has been made permanent. It will now run fortnightly at the library during the school term.
“We live in a world where technology is increasingly part of our everyday lives which makes this program a great initiative,” City of Parramatta Administrator Amanda Chadwick said.
“Not all children have access to this type of learning at school or at home.
“The Technology Club gives kids an opportunity to learn, not just how to use technology, but also how to interact and engage with it.”
Library staff members have been trained to facilitate the sessions and project materials are supplied for participants.
This includes five items of technology that all have a coding or robotics element to them and are adaptable to the skills of the children.
The skills developed in the Technology Club, such as programming and coding, tie in with core school subjects such as science and math, and strengthen problem solving and creative thinking skills.
