The City of Albany has been recognised for its efforts in waste minimisation and awareness and has been named the 2016 State Winner of the Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Environmental Education award.
The award recognises organisations for their innovative environmental advocacy and awareness programs.
City of Albany Waste Sustainability Officer Sonja Parker said the award not only recognised the achievements of the City of Albany as an organisation but also the Albany community.
“It is not just the City of Albany who have contributed to waste awareness within our community, organisations such as GreenSkills, South Coast Natural Resource Management, Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood Centre and the Western Australian Museum’s Young Naturalists Club have all worked to ensure the community is educated about the impact waste has on our environment,” Ms Parker said.
“We also must thank the hard work from the Keep Albany Beautiful Committee who do a fantastic job and Janice Ford who entered the submission on our behalf.”
The City of Albany is working on a number of initiatives to educate the Albany community on waste, sustainability and recycling.
“With assistance from Cleanaway, we are working to produce a number of community education programs, including a City of Albany app which will be free to download,” Ms Parker said
“To accompany the community education and app roll out, we have recently upgraded Fossicker’s Tip Shop to accommodate more stock and we have introduced ‘Mr Fossicker’ who is the face of the facility.”
“The app is scheduled to be released at the Green Fair on the Square on Saturday, 5 November 2016 and we are really excited to see Cleanaway’s grant and months of work come to fruition.”
