Emergency housing a welcome early Christmas gift

Hot on the heels of a joint commitment from Isaac and the Central Highlands Regional Councils to advocate for better affordable housing, Aurizon has announced 31 houses in Emerald, Moranbah and Dysart will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Isaac Affordable Housing Trust (IAHT) and the Central Highlands (QLD) Housing Company Limited (CHQHC) recognised the increasing demand for affordable housing in both regions during a meeting last Thursday, resulting in a decision to work together to lobby the state government.

The donated houses will be used to support the Salvos’ programs for emergency and community housing, particularly for women and children in crisis through domestic violence and homelessness.

“Not only is this a wonderful early Christmas gift for both our regions, it is also a positive step towards our shared goal with Isaac of more affordable housing in our communities,” Central Highlands Mayor and CHQHC chairman Kerry Hayes said.

“The Salvos do amazing work in our townships, so this is a very deserving contribution to their cause. These homes will expand the local affordable housing opportunities available for those who need it most. We only hope we can continue to build on this.”

A dual position paper outlining the challenges in the housing market will be developed by IAHT and CHQHC, and presented to the Queensland Government next year.

Aurizon (formerly Queensland Rail) donated a total of 37 houses in northern Queensland. The houses are expected to be transferred formally to the Salvos on 16 January 2017.
