100 years of local government

Renmark Paringa Council in South Australia recently celebrated 100 years of local government in the area.

To mark the occasion the community gathered at the Renmark Paringa Community Museum in Paringa on Sunday 20 November.
The event, although hot (40 degrees), was a success and Council would like to acknowledge and thank previous District Council of Paringa staff and elected members for attending it and sharing their stories from their time on the Council and to the 400+ guests who attended.

The District Council of Paringa was amalgamated with Renmark in 1996 to form Renmark Paringa Council and the last General Manager of the Paringa District Council, Neil Martinson, is now Renmark Paringa Council’s Mayor.

The Renmark Paringa Community Museum hosts a vast collection of agricultural equipment that has been used in the region since it was first populated.

The Museum itself is interactive and allows visitors to move around at their own leisure with many stations set up with interesting facts about the area.

The event also included live entertainment and treasure hunts for kids.

Local historian Heather Everingham from Olivewood Estate gave fantastic accounts of Paringa’s history and traced how it has evolved into the town it is today. Heather’s knowledge greatly assisted Council in organising the event.

By all accounts, it was a fantastic opportunity for current staff and elected members to speak with previous staff and elected members from the District Council of Paringa and hear how local government has evolved in the last 20 years and how it has shaped the council area.
