Making moves on healthier living

Moonee Valley residents are becoming more active than ever, thanks to the success of the Active8 program.

Running for the third year in the Melbourne municipality, the eight-week health and wellbeing program encourages people to increase their physical activity, and become aware of how to lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle with a huge choice of free activities and workshops.

The program caters for people of all ages and abilities, proving that it’s never too late to learn positive habits and get healthy.

Moonee Valley Mayor, Andrea Surace, said the popular program provides introductory activities that make it easy for people to start their health and wellbeing journey.

“With the Active8 program, residents can have a taste of the many health and wellbeing activities across Moonee Valley, with the view to adopt one, or more, to continue after the program finishes,” the mayor said.

Since its inception in 2014, more than 2400 people have registered to take part in over 40 diverse activities, ranging from Pilates and meditation classes to barefoot bowls, self-defence, orienteering, dance and skateboarding.

This year, the program also included a number of female-focused activities to encourage women to be physically active, such as the women-only running class and Girls Auskick.

Mayor Surace said Council had been inspired by the
Federal Government’s Girls Make Your Move campaign.

“We’re keen to do our bit to help break down some of the barriers that prevent people from being active and support
community-wide participation,” said the mayor.

“Active8 is certainly making moves, with more than 6.5 million steps walked by our residents in the community step challenge this year.”
