Taking the pressure out of parking

The City of Greater Geelong in Victoria has implemented a simple solution to counter the pressures of finding a parking space.

Increased activity in Central Geelong is rapidly increasing demand for parking, and the City is encouraging workers to investigate the many options available.

City of Greater Geelong General Manager Investment and Attraction Brett Luxford said there were many alternatives available for people to take the stress out of searching for a parking spot.

“Geelong is a great place to live and work and is blessed to have many options for central Geelong workers and shoppers,” he said.
“Buses, bikes, trains, taxis and the Central Geelong Park and Ride shuttle are all available in Central Geelong.”

Mr Luxford said city workers should take advantage of the City’s Park and Ride service, which meets motorists who park their car in Upper Hearne Parade, Eastern Park.

“For just a $3 parking fee, the Park and Ride service allows workers to ride the bus into Central Geelong every morning and evening.
“It’s a great way to take the stress out of finding a park each day, and a much cheaper way to park in the city.

“Best of all, you can avoid that daily search for loose change by pre-purchasing tickets at any of our customer service centres.”

Mr Luxford said the Park and Ride attracted a regular clientele but there was still an opportunity for more people to use the service.

“The bus shuttle has the capacity to carry up to 300 passengers morning and evening and there is plenty of space for more cars to park at Eastern Park.”

The two buses operate in rotation and each trip takes about 10 minutes.

Mr Luxford said a comprehensive car parking strategy would start shortly, looking at meeting current and future demand.

He said this strategy would consider a range of options including better utilisation of current options, off-street multi-level parking facilities, and recommendations for park and walk options.
