Increasing first aid training

Noosa Council celebrated Heart Week by promoting Walking Groups in Tewantin and Pomona and providing first aid training for 60 hardworking local volunteers.

Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin said Council invited community groups to nominate two volunteers each to complete a day’s First Aid Training during Heart Week, which ran from 30 April to 6 May.

“The response was overwhelming,” Ms Hamblin said. “We’re thrilled about how excited the community groups have been to get the chance to take part in this training.

“We put out an Expression of Interest and we had a huge response.
“It’s great to have volunteers of community groups trained up just in case an emergency occurs at an event. The more first-aid-trained people we have in the community, the safer it is.”

Council is also encouraging people to join a local walking group to keep their hearts healthy.

Currently there are two well-established groups in Tewantin and Pomona.

“The Pomona Pacers have been getting together to walk regularly for seven years. They now have such a social program that walking becomes more than just a stroll in the park,” Ms Hamblin said.

“They walk Monday to Friday at 7am from Pomona Community House. After Wednesday’s walk they enjoy a social coffee. They even have a ‘Moon Walk’, with a walk and dinner on the Wednesday evening closest to the full moon.”

Heart Week is an initiative of the Heart Foundation to promote good heart health.
