In the midst of the clean up after Cyclone Debbie, Whitsunday Regional Council has stepped in to ensure the local Annual Proserpine Show will go ahead.
Council has come to the rescue of the Proserpine Show Committee, voting to provide funding to ensure the annual show is held this year.
The Proserpine Showgrounds suffered significant damage when Tropical Cyclone Debbie unleashed her wrath on the region in March.
Deputy Mayor and Division 3 Councillor John Collins moved a motion of support at a recent Ordinary Council Meeting in Proserpine for council to make a one-off contribution of $18,000 to ensure the 2017 Proserpine Show goes ahead as planned.
“It was obvious that the Proserpine Show Committee were in dire need of support after the devastation inflicted by Cyclone Debbie,” Cr Collins said.
“This is not just a Proserpine issue as this is the annual show for residents of Divisions 1,2 and 3 and also a fair number of Division 4 residents.
“The show is an iconic event for our community and we needed to ensure it was held to continue our region’s recovery process post Cyclone Debbie.”
Mayor Andrew Willcox also spoke in favour of the funding emphasizing the importance of the show to the region and it was supported by all Councillors in a 6-0 vote.
“Councillors also voted to provide in-kind support valued at $2000 to assist with clean-up after the show,” the Mayor said.
“Every year members of council’s workforce offer their services in their own time to assist with clean-up and the in-kind assistance will cover use of council machinery.”
