A theatrical production centring on the experiences of mining communities was staged in Queensland’s Isaac Regional Council recently – and engaged a cast and crew of several hundred talented locals.
The production, The Power Within, attracted more than 5500 people from across the region over two nights in Moranbah.
Council partnered with Queensland Music Festival (QMF) to present the production at Ted Rolfe Oval in July.
The Power Within reflected on the realities and the resources of pop-up mining towns plus the sheer power and beauty of a united community.
A cast of up to 250 talented locals from Dysart, Clermont, Middlemount, Glenden, Nebo and Moranbah took part and were supported by well-known music industry professionals.
Mayor Anne Baker said the community engagement energised the region and the contribution from locals was exceptional.
“I am so incredibly proud of the way our communities rallied together in a moving showcase of our region’s rich history, vibrant present and diverse future,” she said.
“This free outdoor musical spectacular moved the audience, myself included, in more ways than one and our community will be forever proud of this achievement.
“The Power Within was a true reflection of the power of our people. It was made possible through unprecedented community pride, passion and spirit.”
QMF artistic director Katie Noonan said seeing community members take the lead on various aspects of the production was incredible.
“Seeing relationships develop across different communities and witnessing the drive and determination of all of those involved to make this project a success was an inspiration,” Ms Noonan said.
“This was more than just another project; people took us into their homes and we made some extraordinary friendships.
“It was an unforgettable experience and we can’t wait to work with the communities of the Isaac region again.”
