Exploring Queensland’s Sandstone Wonders just got easier

Banana Shire Council in central Queensland has been building its tourism profile in recent years and just announced new accommodation to further boost visitor opportunities.

Located on the banks of the Callide Dam, in the outskirts of Biloela, Lake Callide Retreat is well located for visitors who want to experience the ‘Sandstone Wonders’ region.

The retreat offers recreation activities on the dam, fishing, and the ability to simply relax in a very peaceful area, as well as being close enough to Biloela to attend local events or attractions.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming guests to the new Lake Callide Retreat,” said Mayor Nev Ferrier.

“We’ve been progressively developing the area and over recent years fishing, water activities and picnicking have been popular with visitors and locals alike. Developing the accommodation now opens the area to people from outside of the region who are visiting friends and family, attending any of the great events, or traveling through on an Outback Queensland trip.”

With financial help from Origin Energy, the Shire developed the comprehensive Sandstone Wonders brand and digital tourism strategy to promote the region’s natural assets and leisure opportunities.

The Sandstone Wonders website includes a set of maps, self-drive itineraries and multimedia elements to guide visitors through the region.

A comprehensive social media strategy has gained the Sandstone Wonders Facebook page 5000 followers.

The new accommodation at Lake Callide Retreat will provide an affordable option for visitors to the region and includes cabins and powered and watered camping sites.

Each of the cabins has kitchenette facilities, a bathroom, reverse cycle air conditioners, a Weber Q and veranda with fantastic views of the Callide Dam.

Recreational activities are one of the key attractions of the Callide Dam and there will be kayaks, stand up paddleboards as well as fishing and red claw gear available for hire at the kiosk.
